2020 - Best Winter Treks in India

Roopkund Trek, Uttrakhand

Roopkund Trek Placeholder

Situated near one of the many divine peaks of the Himalayas, Roopkund is a lake where mountaineers and trekkers, seeking all sorts of adventure exploration and thrill, come to trek. This trek is most suitable for those who have had some previous trekking experience, but with the right guides, beginners can do it too! Ensure you’re fit so that you’re able to experience the mystery and the beauty of Roopkund, to its fullest!

The name ‘Roopkund’ is the derivation of two words ‘Roop’ and Kund’. Roop means form or appearance, and Kund would roughly translate to a small reservoir.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the lake, primarily because of the main reason for which people go there, which is, the skeletal remains of certain humans. There are many local legends with respect to how a particular group of skeletons is found over there and not anywhere else for miles around the lake. It also seems that the skeletons are generally larger in size, and most of the skeletons’ cause of death has been due to severe head trauma. if there was a particular civilization who is skeletal remains have been preserved then where are all the structures? if we say that a group of people was traveling then how did they all died because of the same cause that too because of a blunt trauma injury to the head? There are many possible theories to however it is safe to say that the whole lake is shrouded in mystery that will probably never be able to solve. The prospect of trekking to a mysterious place is exciting because of the nature of exploration it carries with it. We know exploration to be a fun activity, we get to meet a lot of new people and get to see pretty places, but can exploration also be an activity that makes you delve into the mysteries of the unexplained? Can the prospect of thrill be produced in our lives in an entirely different manner? The answers can only be found by exploring the skeletal lake – Roopkund, by your self.
