2019 - Best Trekking locations of India

The Great Chadar Trek, Leh Ladakh, J&K

Chadar Trek journey commences from Leh town. For anyone who is planning to go for this trek, the only way to reach Leh is by flight. The entire region is surrounded by snow – A white paradise one may say! Glimpses of the snow-capped mountains are vigil from the flight as it descends toward Leh which is located at 11400 feet above sea level. The trek is aloft the Zanskar River which rests frozen during the winter. The most favoured time to cross the ice would be in February. During that time, the ice is at its most stable state. This Frozen River Trek will start from the small village of Chilling from where the Zanskar River begins to freeze.

One important factor to note here is that the ice can be very dangerous at times. One needs to estimate the safe paths over the dubious ice sheets. The trekkers have the option to camp in the caves along the banks like the locals or set up tents where the ice is the most stable.

Warm and woollen layered clothes are highly recommended to be kept always with you throughout the trek. The temperature here goes invariably low, hence keeping the body warm & blood running is a priority.

To be aware of ice conditions in the Chadar trek is always a wise thing to do. Always make sure of these points:

  • The trekker must be aware of the ice sheet conditions.
  • Be careful while walking and always look for ice cracks.

Best place to walk is where the path is coated with snow. Do not take the risk of walking on a fragile piece of ice.
